Op 28 mei is het Adviescollege toegetreden tot 'The International Conference of Information Commissioners', ook wel afgekort als ICIC.
ACOI is lid geworden van dit internationale netwerk om kennis uit te wisselen over vraagstukken die ook op andere plekken in de wereld terugkeren. Om daarvan te leren als organisatie en om die kennis en ervaring zowel in Nederland als buiten onze grenzen breder bekend te maken.
Wat is de ICIC?
ICIC heeft als doel om de implementatie van wetgeving over de toegang tot publieke informatie (Access to Information, of ATI-wetgeving) te bevorderen. De leden zien dit als een fundamentele pijler voor een goede sociale, economische en democratische ontwikkeling. De ICIC heeft momenteel 86 geaccrediteerde leden (waaronder bijvoorbeeld de Verenigde Staten, Albanië, Buenos Aires, Zuid-Afrika) en 3 waarnemers. In Europa zijn ook leden actief, waaronder uit België, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Schotland, Duitsland en Zwitserland.
Visie en missie van ICIC
ICIC streeft ernaar hét mondiale forum te zijn dat informatiecommissarissen met elkaar verbindt om de transparantie van en verantwoording door de overheid te verbeteren in het voordeel van iedereen. Dit doet ICIC door het delen van kennis en goede werkwijzen, het opbouwen van capaciteit bij de leden, het helpen identificeren van wat er nodig is voor mondiale vooruitgang en door optredens op internationale fora.
Voorbeelden van activiteiten
Een keer per jaar is er een grote internationale conferentie waarbij de leden bijeenkomen om actualiteiten over ATI-wetgeving en een gezamenlijk statement uit te brengen. In gezamenlijke online werkgroepen delen de leden ook op andere momenten informatie. Bijvoorbeeld over rechtszaken die in hun land of regio spelen of over praktische werkwijzen zoals voor âtransparancy by designâ.

ACOI has become a member of this international network to exchange knowledge on issues that are also recurring in other places in the world. To learn from this as an organization and to make that knowledge and experience more widely known both in the Netherlands and across our borders.
What is the ICIC?
ICIC's goal is to promote the implementation of legislation on access to public information (ATI-laws). Members see this as a fundamental pillar for good social, economic and democratic development. The ICIC currently has 86 accredited members (including, for example, the United States, Albania, Buenos Aires, South Africa) and 3 observers. There are also active members in Europe, including from Belgium, the United Kingdom, Scotland, Germany and Switzerland.
Vision and mission of ICIC
ICIC strives to be the global forum that connects information commissioners to improve government transparency and accountability for the benefit of all. ICIC does this by sharing knowledge and good practices, building capacity among its members, helping to identify what is needed for global progress and by acting in international forums.
Examples of activities
Once a year, there is a major international conference where the members come together to discuss current affairs on ATI legislation and issue a joint statement. In joint online working groups, members also share information at other times. For example about court cases in their country or good practices such as 'transparency by designâ.
